About this piece

She is assembled from steel and still manages to be the most graceful thing in the room. Stardancer is built from hundreds of individual steel plate fragments — cut, curved, and layered over a structural armature — her body a mosaic of dark iridescent metal that shifts from black to violet to bronze depending on where the light lands. Up close she reads as shattered. At distance, she reads as whole.

The tutu is stainless mesh. It sits at the hips as it always has — impossibly light, impossibly soft — and the contrast is the entire argument of the work. That something made of broken metal and heat and grinding can still arrive at grace. That the dancer and the damage are the same thing.

The small crown at her head is wire and rod, just barely there. Her chin is lifted. She is mid-breath, mid-preparation — not performing yet, but about to. The moment before the moment.
