About this piece
A cast face — eyes half-open, expression unreadable — Melancholy sits at the threshold between presence and absence. Steel rods erupt from the crown and descend through the neck into the base, as if the head is threaded onto a current it can neither control nor interrupt.
The face was cast from a steel alloy and worked by hand while still rough from the mold — texture built up in layers, then treated with a dark patina that settles deepest in the recesses of the eyes and brow. The rods were welded in place last, their irregular angles giving the piece a restless energy that the face itself refuses to betray.
